At Home Winter Workout Ideas

Winter brings the cold but also lots of wonderful holidays and fun times with the family. For many folks, it can be difficult to get your workouts in between the cold weather and the extra family time. So here are a few simple, at-home workout ideas to keep you active during the colder months.

Take Advantage of Winter-based Activities

Embrace the season and try some winter activities! There are plenty of sports to try like ice skating, skiing, and snowboarding. Make some time to engage in your favorite winter sport, or you can always try a new one with friends or family if you don’t have one.

If you don’t have the time or resources to try a sport, there are other winter activities that definitely count as workouts, like snow shoveling and taking a brisk walk outside when the weather permits.

Try an Online Workout

There are so many workout videos available on the internet. And this is the time to take advantage! There’s a little bit of everything – from dancing to strength to Pilates. With so much to choose from, it can be hard to know which ones to try out. If you’re looking for some advice, we’ve got you covered! Here’s my list of 5 YouTube channels you can try out:

Stretch it Out

It is a busy time of year for many people, which often brings a lot of stress. A great way to relieve tension for the mind and body is to stretch! You can follow a specific video if you’d like more guidance, or you can add some stretching into your daily routine. Stretch before bed, in front of your favorite TV show or movie, or with a friend or family member!

Build Strength with Bodyweight and Resistance Bands Exercises

You don’t have to have lots of dumbbells and barbells at home to build some strength. You can get a great workout in using your own bodyweight. Here some exercises you can try:

  • Squats

  • Lunges

  • Bridges

  • Pushups

  • Bird dogs

  • Burpees

  • Planks

  • Side planks

  • Sit ups

  • Bicycle crunches

  • Dead bugs

If you’d like to try adding a little extra resistance, grab a resistance band! Resistance bands are a great option since they’re compact and light, which makes them ideal for travelling! Here are some exercises you can try:

  • Deadlifts

  • Banded squats

  • Lateral Walk

  • Rows

  • Bicep curls

  • Tricep kickbacks

  • Overhead press

  • Side dips

Hope this gives you some ideas for staying active this winter! Happy Holidays!
